2021 Merlot

Along with Syrah, Merlot might be Washington’s most singular varietal. Far from the insipid, characterless California wines that were mocked in the movie Sideways, Washington Merlot is fresh, structured and distinct, echoing Merlot’s spiritual home of Bordeaux, France. In fact, a well-known Washington producer is famous for saying that he used his Merlot “to give backbone to his Cabernet.” This Merlot comes from Red Heaven, a terrific vineyard at the base of the Red Mountain that has been adding character to our Coalesce Bordeaux Blend since we started making it in 2015. This year, we’re letting it take a star turn in a club-only release.

The 2021 Merlot is a bright purple-ruby in the glass. The aromatics are pronounced already: fresh red plums, raspberry liqueur, cedar, baking spice and fresh tobacco. Medium-bodied and, the the palate is mouthwatering with a mix of red and black fruits. The long, building finish ends on a sultry blend of green herbs and dark chocolate.
